Mandurah-based surfing young gun Maverick Wilson blitzed the competition when he carved his way to a win in the WA leg of 2017 Rip Curl GromSearch Series at Trigg Beach over the weekend.
The budding star took on some of the top surfers the country has to offer in the national competition, winning his way through to the under 12s boys final where he executed beautifully to score 14.26 of a possible 20 and take the victory.
He will now move on to the GromSearch’s national final, which will be held on the New South Wales coastline in January.

“I’m so stoked to have won, especially because all the boys have been surfing really well,” Maverick said.
“I’m really looking forward to the National Final and thanks to my dad for taking me to the beach everyday.”
Maverick’s victory saw him edge out his Mandurah mate Macklin Flynn, who finished an impressive third in the final.
Jake Hagan (Geraldton) and Jack Ragen (Bateau Bay, NSW) came in second and fourth respectively.
The win comes on the back of a tremendous past 12 months for the local youngster.
After winning the Hurley BL’s Blast Off event in New South Wales last October, Maverick signed a major brand sponsorship deal with Rip Curl.
He also took out wins in the Taj Small Fries under 10s competition, the Wahu Surfing Groms Comp and win the under 10s Mandurah Board Riders category.
Fellow Mandurah surfer April McPherson also shone at Trigg Beach over the weekend, making it through to the final for the under 16s girls where she was narrowly defeated.
Her second-place performance earned her the Rip Curl Oustanding Performer award.
