Two Mandurah Catholic College students have been recognised for their leadership and teamwork by the Australian Defence Forces.
Year 12 student and St Bernadette’s Communications Captain, Samuel Petherick and Year 10 student Zane Riches were presented with the ADF’s Long Tan Youth Leadership and Teamwork Award at the College’s Colours Assembly this morning.
The award started in 2006 to recognise students who demonstrate leadership and teamwork within both the school and the broader local community.
The awards also recognise those who display strong values, such as doing one’s best, respect for others and mateship, all characteristics integral to Australian society.
The awards are an important initiative by the Australian Government working in conjunction with the Australian Defence Force.
They are designed to encourage senior students – tomorrow’s leaders – to actively participate in the life of their schools and local communities.
Leading Seaman Stephen Williams, from HMAS Stirling, presented the two students with their awards.
A decisive Australian victory, The Battle of Long Tan, is recognised as one of the defining moments in Australian military history.
The Long Tan award acknowledges the determination, mateship, teamwork and tenacity that resulted in 108 men from the Australian Task Force defeat 2500 men from the Viet Cong forces.
