Pinjarra’s Saint Joseph’s Catholic Primary School students teamed up recently to assist local not-for-profit organisation K9 Rescue.
Year 6 student Emily Lenzarini came up with the idea of organising a collective fundraiser for the not-for-profit as part of a school research project.
Genius Hour is an initiative that encourages the students to research a topic they are interested in and passionate about to come up with ways to spark personal and community action.
Emily investigated ways to reduce the number of abandoned dogs and cats in the local community and decided to see what her fellow students could do to help K9 Rescue.
K9 is a Nambeelup-based not-for-profit organistion that treats, cares for and re-homes dogs in the Peel region, and promotes responsible ownership practices.
Determined to assist the organistion in their quest to improve the living standards of abandoned dogs, Emily spoke to the carers and volunteers at K9 and crafted a list of items they were in need of.
The school then sent a letter to the families asking them for donations, including chew toys, dog treats and biscuits.
Two weeks later, the school had collected three big tubs worth of donations from the local community.
K9 volunteers Linda and Liam visited the school with K9 mascot Ace to collect the donations.
Saint Joseph principal Joy Ketteringham said she would like the K9 run to become an annual event.
