Dawesville surfing young gun Macklin Flynn will take his talents to the east coast when he competes in the Hurley BL’s Blast Off later this month.
The 10-year-old WA state champ will come up against some stiff competition in the world’s biggest pre-junior surf festival, and will be the sole representative from the west.
Along with 349 other groms, he’ll hit the waves in competition as well as receiving world-class coaching and performance feedback from some of surfing’s all-time greats, including event founder Barton Lynch, Layne Beachley and Tom Carroll.
The event provides Macklin with a great opportunity to improve his surf skills and have his talent honed.
It’s also a chance for the youngster to make his mark among the next generation of Australian surfers, with surfing to make its Olympic debut in Tokyo in 2020.
He will follow in the footsteps of fellow Mandurah grommet Maverick Wilson, who took out the award for best performing grommet boy at last year’s Blast Off.
Maverick’s brother, Phoenix, also competed at the event making it through to the quarter finals.
The Blast Off will be run at New South Wales’ Palm Beach this year, with Whale Beach and Avalon acting as back-up locations depending on the surf.
The competition itself is broken into age and gender categories from six to 14-years-old, with Macklin competing in the under 12 boys.
Surfers will hit the water for four days of surfing on Tuesday, September 26.
