WA Police have conducted a road safety blitz on Indian Ocean Drive and after a horrific accident on the road last week resulted in three deaths - including a six-year-old boy who had been travelling with his mother.
Local police organised the operation in order to target speeding drivers, with some travellers using the highway clocked exceeding the speed limit by up to nearly 50km/h.
Just one day after the accident, Jurien Bay Police said one driver was pulled over after travelling at 143km/h on the stretch.
Not even five minutes later, police then stopped another driver for travelling at 137km/hr.
According to Jurien Bay Police, the latest law breaker was a man who had been caught travelling at 154km p/hr because he was "in a rush to get home to pack for a holiday."
He was fined $1000 and penalised seven demerit points.
Police and Road Safety Minister Michelle Roberts said the result of the blitz was "disappointing".
"After the week we have had on this road, it is incredibly disappointing that people are still driving at these excessive and dangerous speeds," she said.
"There is no excuse, it is completely irresponsible and puts the lives of all road users at risk.
"We've made no secret of the fact police are paying very close attention to Indian Ocean Drive and they will continue to do so.
"School holidays are just a month away and with the weather clearing, I expect many people will use Indian Ocean Drive to visit some of the popular towns along that part of the coast.
"Drivers need to slow down to save lives and prevent serious injury."
Earlier this year, the Road Safety Commission announced it would conduct a risk audit on the road in order to investigate its engineering, driver behaviour and road use.
MLA for Moore Shane Love has also previously said there needed to be urgent action in order to improve both the infrastructure of the road and driver behaviour on the highway.
"The [stretch] south of Lancelin has never really been upgraded to the extent needed to carry that level of traffic, in my view," he said.
"What that means is you've got limited passing opportunities, lots of narrow sections of winding road, and lots of double white lines. People get impatient and they're ignoring the double white lines."
Premier Mark McGowan flagged Labor party plans to redirect Royalties for Regions funding towards fixing regional roads within the first 100 days of government back in March this year.
"Your chances of being killed on a regional road in Western Australia are the highest in Australia, some parts in regional WA have worse death rates than some parts of Africa," he said.
"Clearly we need to do more. I am amazed that the Liberals and Nationals are opposing spending money on dangerous regional roads."
The RAC Risky Roads 2016/17 survey named Indian Ocean Drive as the seventh most dangerous road in WA, and said it "lacked overtaking opportunities... had tight curves and blind crests."
