Muay Thai fighters will take to the ring at the Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre next month for the Futures VI fight night.
Following on from the fifth round of Futures bouts held in Halls Head in February, the event’s sixth installment promises to be bigger and better with a massive pair of main events.
In a card set to encompass approximately 20 fights, Alice Becklake and Nicola Callander will go head-to-head in a fierce clash in the women’s main bout, followed by an international match-up between Thailand’s Khumsab and Western Australia’s Ben Cant.
The night will be a groundbreaking one for female Muay Thai fighters in Western Australia, with the card set to be a 50/50 ratio of men’s and women’s fights.
Promoter and True Grit trainer Chantel Green said it was a huge change of pace from the usually male-dominated events.
“Last time around we had one or two female fights which was an achievement in itself, but to have around 10 lined up for the card is huge,” she said.
“It’s really refreshing. Sometimes these women wouldn’t get chances like this so we’re really proud to be able to showcase some of the state’s best.”
Green said the event, which will be the first Futures card held at night, would give locals the chance to see some of WA’s top fighters.
“There’s so much talent on the card. Ben Cant is a terrific fighter and the two main events especially should provide some really good entertainment,” she said.
“It’s really special for us to be able to bring this sort of show to Mandurah.”
The success of the Futures events lies in the range of Muay Thai fighters they showcase.
Age divisions range from juniors through to novice, amateurs and professionals, allowing up and comers to perform as curtain-raisers for established pro fighters.
The bouts will be fought on the Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre’s new show courts on Saturday, September 9 with doors opening at 5pm.
Tickets to the night begin at $40 for grandstand seating, $55 for a table seat and $550 for a table of 10 people.
