For rescue dogs Marna and Parley, the outlook was bleak.
The pair were found on a Medina property in May this year, dehydrated, malnourished and riddled with fleas.
The two Shar Peis were assessed by an emergency vet, and it was found both dogs were on the brink of starvation and had suffered from a range of painful infections.
"They arrived at RSPCA WA in July 2016, after our inspectors found them in poor condition with no access to fresh food or water," a spokesperson said.
"Our Inspector was shocked at the state of these two dogs when they first attended the house."
The RSPCA promptly seized the pair from their 29-year-old owner Tamahne Ketchup, and chief inspector Amanda Swift said there was "no excuse" for the condition of the two dogs.
"After talking with the owner and trying to work with her to improve the dogs' conditions, the Inspector was disappointed that the owner continued to ignore the dogs' needs."
The dogs were taken into the RSPCA WA rehoming program, and Ms Ketchup was ordered to pay $4000 and was banned from owning a dog for three years.
After months working with RSPCA employees towards rehabilitation, the organisation said the pair had finally found their "furever" home on Tuesday afternoon.
"After more than a year recovering in our care and also receiving TLC in foster care, Marna and Parley have now found a loving family in Daniel and Aoife," a spokesperson said.
"We couldn't be happier that they've been adopted together and wish them all the best in their new life."
