Residents and visitors across Mandurah and the Shire of Murray will be able to roll up their sleeves and get their hands dirty to celebrate National Tree Day this week.
As part of the National Tree Day celebrations, several tree planting events will be held in Parklands, Lakelands and Ravenswood in a bid to restore the local landscape and reconnect residents with nature.
National Tree Day was an initiative created by Planet Ark in 1996 as part of a national campaign to promote community tree planting through schools, local councils and community groups.
Since starting more than two decades ago, the initiative has seen more than 23 million trees being planted across Australia.
George Brook Reserve, Ravenswood
The Shire of Murray will be holding their National School Tree Day event from 9am to 3pm on Friday, with more than 300 students from local schools gathering at George Brook Reserve to plant some shrubs.
Austin Cove Baptist College, Carcoola Primary School, Dwellingup Primary School, North Dandalup Primary School and Riverside Primary School students will be participating in the event.
Lakelands Primary School
On Friday morning, Lakelands Primary School will also be holding their 10th school tree planting day.
More than 300 students from Year 3 to Year 6 will come together to plant nearly 1500 seedlings nurtured by Year 11 students as part of their integrated science class with the help of Men of the Trees.
Marelee Reserve, Parklands
Mandurah will also be celebrating National Tree Day with a free community event at Marlee Reserve on Sunday.
The event, which will start at 9am and will run until 12pm, comes after a series of tree planting events across the City.
Marlee Reserve in Parklands is an important wetland area which hosts one of the few remaining Tuart stands in WA.
The reserve also provides habitat for protected and endangered species including Black Cockatoos and Phascogales.
Attendees to the event will be able to enjoy tree planting, educational activities, plant giveaways, native animals and take a free ride on the Mandurah Fun Train.
