Peel Thunder youngster Aaron Naughton’s draft stock continued its rise following a blistering performance from the athletic defender in a loss to Subiaco on Saturday.
In just his second game at the league level, Naughton looked right at home against the top-placed Lions intercepting a number of plays in his role at half back.
The Rockingham junior managed 17 disposals, 11 marks and went forward to score his first league goal, despite his side going down 6.4 (40) to 12.14 (86).
His 11 marks highlighted his sublime aerial ability, as his clean pair of hands constantly cut off Subiaco’s forward entries despite the wet conditions.
Naughton’s performance earned him major wraps from coach Cam Shepherd.
“I thought it was a great performance. His ability to get the ball back in our hands really gave us a lift,” he said.
“Losing by 40-plus points we’re naturally disappointed, but I thought our defence still played reasonably well and Aaron was one of the leaders down there.
“To think it was just his second game is quite amazing. The way he moves down back and the way he took contested marks certainly looked like someone with more senior experience.
“He continues to build his brand and is showing why an AFL club will pick him up later this year.”
Naughton’s big day earned him a spot in the WAFL.com.au team of the round, and comes on the back of a stunning national under 18s carnival which saw him named as the All-Australian centre-half-back.
Renowned AFL.com.au draft expert Callum Twomey’s most recent Phantom Form Guide had Naughton pegged as the 20th in line among the country’s top draft picks.
Performances like his game against Subiaco could see him climb that ladder, as one of the top defenders in this year’s crop.
