Local musician Jasmine Atkins is ready to let music fans all over the country into her world of songs and stories with her new EP, Key To My Heart.
Winning over audiences with her infectious personality, raw and personal songwriting ability and distinctive vocal delivery, she could be one of the best kept secrets of the West Australian music scene.
Kicking goals with her first single and film clip, Sun Will Come Out Again, the track deals with mental illness and Atkins hopes she can help those with mental health concerns and give them hope.
The team from Klik Productions shot the clip at the abandoned maximum security division of the old Morisset Hospital in New South Wales.
Fans are loving it, with almost 28,000 views on Facebook.
Jasmine penned all six tracks on Key To My Heart, recorded with fellow West Australian Mark Donohoe in June and July 2016.
The Murphy Brothers – Chris and Courtney – joined musicians Ian Simpson, Mike Hagerty Jr, Travis Bryant, and Mark on the album for five tracks, with Everywhere I Go recorded previously featuring Jonny Taylor on guitars, Mark on bass and Trent Matherson on drums.
This track was previously released as a single and charted at No. 4 on the iTunes Country Chart.
The singer-songwriter said she loved working with Donohoe who pushed her to be the best she could be.
“Mark is very good at encouraging me,” she said.
“I love him as a producer and engineer because he has a way of getting the best out of me and I still don’t know how he does it.
He’s straight to the point and I respect that.”
The EP takes listeners from fun, poppy songs like Key To My Heart and This Is Where I Belong, to issues of mental illness in Sun Will Come Out Again, and domestic violence in What Am I Fighting For.
On My Wall is a moving song about Atkins’ great-grandfather that she wrote when he passed away, and Everywhere I Go is about being in a relationship that you know you shouldn’t stay in.
Each song has either come from personal experience or ideas that have come to the singer-songwriter from friends or other sources.
The singer-songwriter said she wanted Key To My Heart to reach out to new listeners.
“I want my listeners to learn a little bit about me and I hope I can help a few people along the way if they’re having a few issues,” she said.
After graduating from the CMAA Academy of Country Music in Tamworth in 2015 and the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts in 2016 with a Bachelor of Music, she’s ready to take her music across the nation and beyond.
Key to my Heart is out now through Maven/Sony Music Australia, available through iTunes.
