Mandurah grommet Macklin Flynn has been carving his way to some massive achievements in the water, including being crowned under 12s state champion in the final round of the WA Junior Surfing Titles in Geraldton over the weekend.
The 10-year-old proved he’s a star on the rise, taking out his first state championship ahead of fellow Mandurah surfers Phoenix and Maverwick Wilson and Yallingup’s Otis North.
Macklin also picked up a custom board after winning the competition’s 2017 WA Junior Rising Star award.
“It was pretty cool,” Macklin said.
“That’s my first state championship. I was pretty stoked.”
The little shredder won two out of three state rounds at Geraldton and Trigg Beach, after coming a close second in Margaret River.
His spectacular results have seen him land a major brand sponsorship deal from Quiksilver, which his dad Rorey said will help out immensely.
“It’s huge. Just in terms of gear and keeping up with all the stuff he goes through it’s a massive thing for us, so we’re really stoked for him,” he said.
Star Surf and Skate have also jumped on board with sponsorship, as Macklin prepares for his next event at home, the 2017 Makin Homes Peel Pro.
While the youngster is eager to win on his home breaks, he is also eyeing a national competition on the Sunshine Coast next month.
“It’s a pretty big few weeks for Macklin going from Geraldton, to the Peel Pro and then over the Queensland for a national event,” Rorey said.
“He’s been great though. He’s always keen to get in the water and surf and taking him over east means he’ll get to compete at a higher level, which is really good for him.”
Macklin has been surfing since the age of three, and will take on 18-year-old’s in this weekend’s Peel Pro.
