Murray’s biggest car show, the Murray Auto Xtravaganza (MAX Pinjarra), secured a significant cash boost from the Shire of Murray on Thursday last week.
The show, which attracts auto enthusiasts from across WA to Pinjarra’s Sir Ross McLarty Oval every year, puts on display some of the country’s best hot rods, street machines, custom classics, motorcycles and vintage tractors.
All proceeds from the show, go towards a charity organistion every year, such as Camp Quality and Riding for the Disabled (RDA).
The show, which is an alcohol-free family-friendly event, attracted 6500 people last year, with most of the attendees coming from outside the Shire of Murray.
However, the event organisers decided to apply for additional funding through the Shire in a bid to grow the show and bring interactive road safety displays and driving simulators for younger people.
“We just want to keep it going, but we need to help,” organiser Noel Nancarrow said in a deputation on Thursday last week.
“We don’t want it to leave the Shire.
“It could be one of the greatest car shows in the state.”
Mr Nancarrow said the event was a big drawcard to the area, bringing new people to Pinjarra, attracting businesses and giving young people something to do.
He said the current funding allowed the organisers to keep the event running, but didn’t allow it to grow to become one of the state’s biggest.
Shire councillors committed to providing $5000 as well as up to $1700 on costs towards the event every year for the next three financial years on the condition that the event remained in the Shire of Murray during that time.
