Some of WA’s best longboard surfing talent converged on the Peel coastline for the final round of the Health Insurance Fund WA Longboard Titles on Friday morning.
With 14 state titles on the line, the event has attracted a strong field of local contestants plus those travelling from Perth, the South West, Mid-West and Great Southern, all of which are chasing qualification for the Australian Surf Festival to be held in New South Wales in August.
Many local Peel surfers are set to compete on home soil, including Chris Fullston (Wannanup), Brendan Collins (Falcon), Ryan Egan (Meadow Springs), and Jacob McIvor (Rockingham).
“Avalon is the ideal wave to ride on a bigger board,” Fullston said.
“It’s an easy entry, but the wave has real power and can wall up for close to one hundred meters offering some great sections.”
Surfing WA events manager Justin Majeks said the upcoming event was a great opportunity for the state’s longboarders.
“It’s a chance for them to prepare for the 20th anniversary Whalebone Classic in Cottesloe in July,” he said.
“I wish all our surfers the best of luck and look forward to crowning our 2017 longboard state champions.”
The event kicked off early Friday morning and will go through to Saturday afternoon, with favourable surf conditions expected throughout.
