Passionate multi-medium artist Rashmi Pemarathne is encouraging Mandurah children to give up videogames and take up the brush this school holidays with a series of workshops at the Contemporary Arts Spaces Mandurah (CASM).
At the workshops, young people aged between five and 18 will be able to learn how to make colourful landscapes using acrylic paint and quilling paper, a technique Ms Pemarathne uses regularly in her art.
“Paper quilling is an ancient art form which links back to ancient Egypt,” she said.
“[It] uses 3mm paper strips to create appropriate shapes to copy the natural forms by rolling and gluing together to create decorative 3D designs.”
At the end of the workshop, attendees will also be able to to take home a free gift pack to further practice the technique.
Ms Pemarathne, who emigrated from Sri Lanka in 2014, said her workshops weren’t only a great way to engage and educate youth and adults alike, but they are also an opportunity for them to share their culture and stories.
“Art and craft allows children to develop fine motor skills, creative thinking in innovative ways and it's fun,” she said.
Ms Pemarathne’s Encourage Self-Expression Through Art & Craft workshops will be held at CASM on July 8 and 15.
- Children aged between five and eight can participate in the workshop between 10am and 1pm on both days.
- People aged between nine and 18 can take part in the workshop between 2.45pm and 5.15pm.
Materials for the course will be provided by Ms Pemarathne.
