Indigenous students at John Tonkin College and Halls Head College celebrated Reconciliation Week by battling it out on the basketball court for the first ever Bindjareb Interschool Basketball Championship.
Teams took to the court at Halls Head Rec Centre with Halls Head taking out the girls game 40-8 while John Tonkin evened the overall ledger with a 30-14 win in the boys match.
John Tonkin College Aboriginal and Islander education officer Isobel Bevis said the game was a unique way for students to engage in Reconciliation Week.
“It’s a really good way for the kids to be part of the week,” she said.
“Sport is a big part of the culture so it’s all about engaging the kids and making sure they get to be involved with Reconciliation Week.”
John Tonkin College student Louise Winmar designed the jerseys for her school.
