The streets of Mandurah and surrounds will turn purple on Friday June 23 as Breast Cancer WA’s biggest yearly fundraiser, Purple Bra Day, hits town once again.
The day is all about having fun, raising funds and showing that the community is Breast Aware.
On the day you will see the Mandurah Angels and some businesses take up the challenge to wear the iconic purple bra on the outside of their clothes, rattling tins and collecting change from locals.
Bunning Mandurah will host a Purple Bra Day raffle ticket stall throughout the day on Friday, with Coles Lakelands doing the same on Saturday June 24.
All the prizes have been kindly donated by local Mandurah businesses.
“All of the donations truly epitomise the spirit, generosity and giving of the local businesses and individual donations from the community,” Mandurah Angels member Heidi McCartney said.
Ms McCartney said Purple Bra Day is also emblematic of the support and community she has found in the Angels group.
“Being diagnosed with Breast Cancer at the age of 36 was one of the biggest shocks of my life,” she said.
“Combined with the fact that my all of family lived overseas and my husband a four-on, one-off FIFO worker, I often felt very alone.
“My good friends and work colleagues were always by my side but could only do what they could do. That was when I became involved with BCCWA [Breast Cancer Care WA] and The Mandurah Angels.”
Ms McCartney said finding common ground with local women and support networks changed the way she perceived her ailment.
“I was introduced to Breast Cancer Care WA counsellor Shelley, who explained how Breast Cancer Care WA could help, through offering emotional, practical and financial support when I needed it,” she said.
“It was amazing, how relieved I was to speak to someone who actually seemed to know what I was experiencing, how I was feeling and how to deal with it all.
“I also connected with breast care nurse Barbara, who was able to explain the medical processes of my breast cancer and help me make decisions about my treatment and cope with the side effects of chemotherapy.
“Being involved with BCCWA, the Mandurah Angels and the Cancer Council show you do not need to go on this journey alone and help is always at hand.”
Ms McCartney and the rest of the Mandurah Angels are calling on the community at large to dig deep in order to support the organisation which has brought so much positive energy to ther lives.
Get on board by giving donations and purchasing raffle tickets on June 23 and 24.
