Growing anti-social behaviour and serious offences in Mandurah’s northern suburbs has prompted Mandurah police to put a new operation in place.
Serious offences include the discovery of a commercial cannabis growing operation in Secret Harbour after receiving information from the public and the bashing of two police officers in Lakelands.
Officers seized more than 280 cannabis plants and substantial amounts of cannabis, and dismantled hydroponic equipment in a Greeson Parkway home while executing a search warrant on May 30.
On June 2, police also arrested two youths in Lakelands after two Mandurah police officers were bashed.
The officers were responding to reports of a large number of young people gathering near the Madora Bay lookout around 7pm.
Police cars attended and dispersed the youths, who moved to a Lakelands home around 9pm where they became violent towards police.
A Mandurah police sergeant and a senior constable from the traffic enforcement unit were hit while dealing with the youths.
“Recently some serious offences occurred in the northern suburbs of our sub-districts,” Mandurah police said.
“Such serious crime is rare in the area, however responding to community concerns and indentifying growing anti-social behaviour occurring the local police team implemented Operation Ferniehirst.”
Operation Ferniehirst is currently under way in Golden Bay, Secret Harbour and surrounding areas with local police teams, the response unit, the traffic enforcement unit, mounted police and the K9 sections targeting the areas’ hotspots and known offenders.
“Local police teams have also had great success using our canine section in the Mandurah CBD, entertainment area and train stations to sniff crooks,” police said.
“All in all a busy month.”
