An enthralling fourth quarter ended in heartbreak for Peel Thunder as a last-minute goal lifted Subiaco to victory on Saturday afternoon.
The lead swung like a pendulum in the final term and in a last-gasp, desperate attempt to win the game it was a true captain’s goal from Lion Kyal Horsley that saw his side to a 12.11 (83) to 12.15 (87) win.
Moments earlier, Peel captain Gerald Ugle thought he was the one who had led his side to a monumental victory.
The Thunder trailed by three points with just minutes left and were positioned deep in enemy lines following a Subiaco behind.
A last resort bomb down the middle from a kick-out allowed Peel Thunder to scrap for the ball and move it to a contest at their centre-half-forward.
Ugle managed to get out the back and run into an awe-inspiring open goal, giving his side a three-point lead with less than a minute on the clock.
But the Lions defied the odds and overcame a flooded Peel backline, with Horsley’s boot returning his side to the lead.
Peel desperately needed a centre clearance, but it was not to be as Subiaco got the ball forward and Liam Ryan was able to mark and chew the needed time off the clock.
It was a sour end to what was a spirited second half from the Thunder.
Peel trailed by 21 points at the long break and it took them 15 minutes into the third quarter before they were able to slot their first goal through the boot of Zac Dawson.
Dawson’s major sparked a run that saw Peel take the lead early in the first quarter and stretch their advantage to 10 points with under 10 minutes remaining.
The Thunder looked likely to run away with the game but Subiaco found a last breath and booted three straight majors through Liam Baker, Dylan Nelson and Liam Ryan.
Trailing by eight points, Peel hit back after a 50m penalty gave Griffin Logue just enough ground to be within range and kick truly from distance.
Ugle would go on to put Peel back in front but Horsley’s last minute dagger saw the Lions rip victory from the Thunder’s hands.
The win is Subiaco’s ninth straight and cements their claim on top spot.
