A cash-strapped Mandurah bowls club has told its members at its annual general meeting it has asked the City of Mandurah to write-off $800,000 of debt.
It is understood Mandurah Bowling Club has also asked the City for help in upgrading and restoring its playing greens.
As part of the renegotiation with the City of the club’s structure, the club could also accommodate event staff for the 2018 Australasian Police and Emergency Services Games.
Members reported the club confirmed the move at their AGM on Thursday, May 25, but a Mandurah Bowling Club official backed away from the claim, saying it was not yet a done deal.
“At this stage we are in negotiations,” the official said.
City of Mandurah chief Mark Newman said they City was working with the Mandurah Bowling and Recreation Club to develop a new operating model to manage the club’s facilities.
“This model will involve a joint management agreement with the club operating from part of the facility and managing the bowling greens and the City to make the remaining portion available for community access under a facility hire arrangement,” he said.
“As a result of these changes, the City is currently negotiating with the Club for changes to the terms and conditions of their lease and loan provisions, however details are still yet to be finalised.
“The City is also working with the club to resolve some structural issues with the outdoor bowling greens resulting from their original construction that will require restoration works. The full details of the scale and scope of these works and the estimated costs are still to be determined.”
Mr Newman said the City was required to provide office space for two event staff in the 12 months before the 2018 Australasian Police and Emergency Services Games under its agreement with WA Police.
“Logistically, it would be beneficial for the staff to located centrally within Mandurah and one of the possible venues for these officers to be located is the Mandurah Bowling and Recreation Club facility,” he said.
“However, this is just one of a number of venues being considered and no decision has been made as yet.”
