Mandurah beach-goers were left perplexed when the carcass of an unidentified whale species washed up at Whitehills Beach on Monday.
The animal, roughly 2.5 metres in length, was reported to the Department of Parks and Wildlife around 5.30pm, who believe it is either a pygmy sperm whale or dwarf sperm whale.
The department has taken DNA samples to confirm the species.
There were no obvious reasons for the death.
