Nine year old Pinjarra girl Dakota Steltman loves art, and wanted to find a way to help brighten up people’s day.
That’s when she came up with the idea to combine her passions and decorate colourful rocks that could be left around town for people to stumble upon.
“I do it to make people happy,” she said.
“We put them out around pretty much wherever we go, and leave them for people to find.”
She’s already made about 90 of the rocks, each hand-decorated using Posca paint pens and distributed in public spaces around Pinjarra and Mandurah.
Each rock has #PinjarraRocks on the back, so people know Dakota’s love for her town.
“It’s so if anyone has Facebook hopefully they’ll put pictures on Facebook and hashtag #PinjarraRocks so we can see where they found them or where they’ve gone,” Dakota said.
“Dakota’s art mad, she does art everywhere,” her mother Lauri-Jane Indrelie said.
Ms Indrelie, who has been helping Dakota to distribute the rocks, said already they were getting a lot of positive feedback from the community.
“We’ve had people send Facebook messages and come tell me they spotted them,” she said.
“[Dakota] told me to go put some on the park bench, so I just chucked some around while she was at school, and when I came back there was a homeless man sitting on the bench and he had one of the rocks, and he was looking at it, smiling.
“It was really nice.”
Dakota and her mum have set up a Facebook page for this heart-warming project, so if you see any #PinjarraRocks around, be sure to let them know at Pinjarra Rocks.
