Peel resident and Wheeler Airfield manager Raalin Wheeler is one of the state’s finalists for the 2017 Volunteer of the Year Awards for his ongoing commitment to keeping his community safe.
Mr Wheeler was announced as a finalist in two award categories recently, including WA Volunteer of the Year and People’s Choice Spirit of Volunteering.
He was nominated for his effort building, maintaining and managing Wheeler Airfield, a key aerial fire fighting base during the Yarloop-Waroona fires in 2016, registering 30 movements a day with a seven and a half minute turnaround.
Shire of Murray president Maree Reid said the fire base had been used every year since its construction in 1997 and is now considered to be one of WA’s best emergency fueling and water locations.
“Wheeler Airfield is an asset to residents of the Shire of Murray, the greater Peel region and the South west region,” she said.
“[Mr Wheeler’s] forethought, vision and personal commitment has directly impacted many lives and saved countless homes, property, lives and livestock over the past two decades.
“Raalin is a quiet achiever who has committed countless hours, with little recognition and who prior to recent feats, received no financial assistance.”
Mr Wheeler has also committed to improving and upgrading the airfield throughout the years, including the construction of a second runway, a larger dam and the installation of a bore to secure water supply last year to assist in fighting future fires.
The Shire of Murray is urging residents and visitors to get behind Mr Wheeler by giving him a vote for the people’s choice award.
Votes can be cast online at awards.volunteeringwa.org.au.
The 2017 Volunteer Awards winners will be announced at the National Volunteer Week Gala Awards Presentation Dinner at the Hyatt Regency Perth Hotel on May 10.
