The long overdue Aubin Grove Station has finally opened in Perth's southern suburbs, and will now offer commuters a 22 to 23 minute journey from Perth City.
On Sunday the first train to stop at the $72 million station arrived. The new facility is expected to save some travellers nearly 40 minutes off their daily commute.
The Aubin Grove Train Station plan was first announced in August 2012, and was designed in an attempt to ease pressure on the struggling Mandurah train line.
The State Government allocated $80 million to the project when it was first designed, but the cost soon ballooned to $125 million.
Premier Mark McGowan said he personally understood the annoyance of travelling on the Mandurah line, and hoped the Aubin Grove Station would help ease congestion in Perth's southern corridor.
"The Aubin Grove Station was part of Labor's long-term vision for the Mandurah Line," he said.
"At the time the Labor Government built the Mandurah Line we made an allowance for this station to be built as population growth increased demand.
"Living in Rockingham I know personally how badly this station is needed to service the growing southern suburbs and that's why we first committed to the construction of this station in 2012.
"I like to acknowledge the previous government and former Premier Colin Barnett's commitment to this project and for following through with its delivery."
