The Peel Thunderbirds are sitting pretty atop the WA Women’s Football League ladder after a crushing win over the Perth Angels on Sunday.
The Thunderbirds blazed away from the outset and did not allow Perth to score at all in the final three quarters, romping their way to an 18.10 (118) to 1.0 (6) win over the league’s newest side.
Kira Phillips impressed with a bag of six goals, while captain and usual-defender Tayla Bresland chipped in with three.
Coach Mark Fenton praised his players for their ability to run out the entire four quarters.
“It probably would have been the easy option for the girls to coast through the second half, but to their credit they kept their foot on the gas and played the whole game out,” he said.
“We were very efficient with the ball – which is pleasing – and we were able to get to the top of the ladder which was a nice achievement.”
The Thunderbirds piled on five goals in the first, second and third quarters before posting three in the fourth.
Their heavy-scoring form follows on from a 55-point win over South Fremantle in round one, and puts them in good stead ahead of their clash against East Perth in round three.
East Perth currently sit last on the ladder having lost their only game of the season to West Perth in a blowout.
Coach Fenton is hoping his side can carry their momentum into the round three clash.
“We like the form we’re in at the moment and we’ve got some quality players to come back to our line-up.
“They (East Perth) will improve on their last outing so it should be a good game.
“I think if we can stick to our structures and carry our momentum into the game we have a really good shot at going three from three.”
The Thunderbirds, along with the rest of the WAWFL, will take a break over the Easter weekend before their game against East Perth at Bendigo Bank Stadium on Sunday, April 23.
