The Ash Black Memorial Rodeo, honouring a locally loved young rodeo star whose life was tragically cut short, saw some great action and attendance over the weekend.
Mr Black was known as a cowboy, bullrider, horseman and all around great guy.
Mr Black sadly took his own life at the age of 19 in January 2015, and the memorial was held to remember him, as well as to shed some more much-needed light on how suicide affects young men in Australia.
The event was held in conjunction with R U OK, with the message of mental health being a big part of the night.
“Ashley started his career riding steers aged 11 in Byford, and carried his success to become the junior Western Australian All Round Champion at age 13," Kirsten McLaughlin said.
Mr Black went on to enter many national championships, while also earning a spray painting apprenticeship.
Attendees said it was the best way possible to honour someone who was very loved by the rodeo community.
“Many thanks to Charles Hull Contracting for the delivery of sand from Premium Sand Waroona, Stock contractors and to all the other people who worked behind the scenes for their effort in making the rodeo such a success,” Ms McLaughlin said.
“Thankyou to the cowgirls, cowboys and to all those who attended for making the night a great success.”
