To celebrate multiculturalism for Harmony Day, the students at Pinjarra Primary School were treated to a Haka – the traditional Maori battle dance – at their school assembly on Tuesday, with group Wairua Tipuna.
“A number of our students have a Maori background, and this year we’ve chosen that as a theme to celebrate their background, and their cultural heritage,” principal Christian Lewis said.
“Our plans for the celebration today started with the assembly, and then the teachers have different cultural activities in the classroom, just to recognise and celebrate diversity.”
Students were also invited to wear either the colour orange – the official Harmony Day colour – or a form of traditional cultural dress.
“We celebrate [Harmony Day] because we have a number of students from culturally diverse backgrounds… they come from all around the world,” Mr Lewis said.
