The Baldivis Brumbies made history when they claimed their first Peel Football Netball League premiership last season, and they’re looking to double their tally this year.
The Brumbies have managed to retain much of their premiership core and with new coach Craig Hamersley leading the way, their eyes are fixated on another deep finish this year.
“I think with the list we have – a lot of boys are in their prime – we should be a team challenging for another flag this year,” Hamersley said.
“The average age around our playing group is probably between 23 and 25 so our roster is in pretty good shape.”
The first-year coach comes into his position after spending a number of years at the Baldivis Football Club.
Hamersley played for the club during his junior and senior years and coached the club’s thirds side in 2015 Last year he led the reserves side into a grand final.
Now, he is hoping his connection to the club will play a part in bringing more success to Baldivis.
“I’ve learnt a lot from (2016 league coach) Mike McCann,” he said.
“He’s a great coach, great mentor and I’ve certainly picked up a lot from him in recent years.”
The Brumbies will be without grand final best on ground medalist Robert Young in season 2017, but Hamersley said the club would have no problem promoting reserves players who are ready to step into a league role.
“I think with our reserves and colts making grand finals last year it shows we’ve got a good basis of players in all grades,” he said.
“Injuries hit teams every year and eventually you’re going to have to call on your depth, and I think our depth is probably one of our strongest points.
“Certainly some of the ressies boys will have more of a say in the league side this season.”
At the forefront of the league side’s playing group will be co-captains Kyle Westwood and Callum Black, both of whom were part of the club’s first premiership side.
“Last year Kyle was the lone captain but I’ve been really impressed with Callum’s leadership and his ability to get around the group,” Hamersley said.
“I think those boys will be great leaders for the club.”
Baldivis’ campaign kicks off against Rockingham in round one, with a grand final replay facing off with Waroona and an Anzac Day clash against Halls Head scheduled for rounds two and three.
