The Runners’ Club program has had students on their feet since Halls Head Primary School was opened 21 years ago.
Each Tuesday and Thursday morning, the students choose between a 1km, 1.5km, 2km or 2.5km course, tallying their distance during the year.
The program was initiated by Mike Staples, the school’s previous physical education teacher, and has been maintained by the current PE teacher Michael Bell.
“The program is designed to encourage fitness and a healthy lifestyle and has several benefits for the students,” Mr Bell said.
“Life will always throw up some curve-balls, but the students will be well placed to deal with challenges if fitness and well-being is an established constant and the ‘good feelings’ are a benchmark set early in life.”
This year there are almost 120 students in the Runners’ Club, which also works as training for Athletics and Cross Country events.
Several students from the school performed exceptionally well in the State Cross Country Championships in Perth last year.
