It’s safe to say the Mandurah Magic’s women’s future is in good hands after juniors from the Mandurah Basketball Association shone in the WA Country Championships in Perth last week.
Mandurah fielded eight sides overall in the championships, with their under 12s and under 13s bringing home grand final trophies.
The Magic’s under 18s also picked up a win in their grand final, which was held a week before the championships.
The under 12s hoisted their trophy after edging out Geraldton 22-19 in a three-point thriller.
Asha Ranson, who was one of five Mandurah players along with a pair of coaches to be named all-stars, topped the scoring for the Magic with six points.
Her fellow all-star Sophia Bassett Scarfe followed suit by buoying the under 13s to a win over Geraldton in the grand final.
Sophia scored nine points as her team won the game 24-14.
It was Georgia Adams who led the way for Mandurah’s under 18s, scoring 18 points as her side beat Bunbury 41-29 in the finals.
The Magic’s under 14s also made it to the grand final, but were beaten by a strong Albany side.
Mandurah Basketball Association operations manager Francine Nicol said the association was thrilled with the performances of their young female players.
“Country Champs is a great opportunity for grassroots players to get a chance to take on other regions,” she said.
“It was great to see all of our girls play some really good basketball and it’s very encouraging for them to take home some trophies.
“I think it’s a credit to the coaches we have and our entire junior program. It’s good to see we have really good players coming through the ranks.”
This coming weekend will see the boys country championships played in Perth, with Mandurah set to field another strong batch of juniors.
