The hunt for future AFL Women’s talent will hit Mandurah next week with WA Football holding a pair of come and try clinics for aspiring female footballers in pre-primary aged all the way through to year 12 at Bendigo Bank Stadium.
The clinics, to be held on Monday, February 27 and Tuesday, March 7 will give young female talents the chance to get up-close and personal with those who know the game best.
They will also be put through their paces with a number of tests.
Peel Thunderbirds coach said it was important that women footballers pick up the game at an early age.
“Skills, depending on how often the player practices, can be taught in anywhere between six to 12 to 18 months, but understanding the game is a whole different thing,” he said.
“It’s much harder to teach someone to read the play of the game.
“If we can get teach that to girls from a young age and all of them understand it by the time they’re ready to play seniors, then you will see the complete evolution of AFL Women’s.”
The come and try clinics will give clubs like the Thunderbirds a chance to recruit more local young talent.
The Mandurah sessions, which will both start at 4pm on their respective days, are two of a total eight WA Football will be holding in February and March.
