Bogan Bingo has become something of a movement locally – and that’s not entirely surprising.
But there’s more to them than just mullet wigs and air guitar-ing to AC/DC: the recent swathe of community parties have raised much-needed funds for youth mental health and homelessness, among others.
The latest Bogan Bingo on the cards has an even more wacky backstory – it involves a cross-country rally on a postie bike, for one.
Riding for Bright Blue – the police officer’s community group dedicated to the prevention and childhood illnesses – Brett Hiddlestone will ride a postie bike from Derby to Kunnunurra and back.
To raise money for what is sure to be a great adventure, Mr Hiddlestone and his wife Aimee are raising money through their Bogan Bingo night, to be held at Coodanup Community Hall on April 8 from 7pm.
“This is something Brett’s been wanting to do for a while,” Ms Hiddlestone said.
“We’ve had friends that have had sick kids at PMH and things like that. It’s pretty awful.
“We have a daughter, and we’ve been lucky that she’s been very healthy so far.
“But when you become a parent, these types of things mean more to you, so I think Brett was really affected by what he saw in those other families.”
The Bright Blue Gibb River Postie Bike Ride, as the name suggests, follows the length of Gibb River Road between the two destinations.
Over five years, Bright Blue has raised more than $3,500,000 for sick kids around the country.
WA Police Commissioner Karl O’Callaghan said it was a testament to how much support the charity has received from members and supporters.
“Our vision is to work with and reach out to our local community to create brighter futures for sick kids,” Mr O’Callaghan said.
“We work with a number of charities to bring hope and healthier opportunities for all children living with brain cancer, brain damage and in social disadvantage.”
Tickets for the event will be sold as tables of eight.
