Education minister Peter Collier has announced the building of a new primary school in Meadow Springs to open for the 2019 school year.
The primary school, which would be built for 430 students at a cost of $15.5 million, was announced by Mr Collier as part of a $83.2 million package for the construction of new schools.
Named North Meadow Springs Primary School, the school would be built at Pineknoll Gardens near the intersection of Mandurah Road and Broadstone Vista and would ease enrolment pressure on Meadow Springs Primary School and Lakelands Primary School.
“Confidence in public schools continues to grow and the Liberal National Government is responding to increasing student enrolments in growing areas of Perth with four new schools for the 2019 school year,” Mr Collier said.
“The schools will each be air-cooled and have general teaching buildings, an early childhood building, music and art/craft facilities, an administration building, library, covered assembly area and canteen, landscaped courtyards, hard courts, an oval, staff room and parking.
“They will also be equipped with the latest technology to support children's education.”
Mandurah MP David Templeman welcomed the decision.
“I welcome this announcement because the new school will take pressure off both Lakelands Primary School and Meadow Springs Primary School, which in particular, has had a large number of demountable classrooms since they opened in 2012,” he said.
Funding for the new school has not been included in the Labor’s party’s Investing in Our Schools policy document, which was also released on Tuesday.
However, a spokesman for opposition leader Mark McGowan said Labor would budget an extra $2.5 million for a sports facility at the new Lakelands Senior High School.
The new high school, which the government planned to open in 2019, is on Banksiadale Gate, Lakelands.
