An empty block of land on Red Road, Parklands, is set to transform from an illegal dumpster into a community space with shared pathways, recreation equipment, trails and nature play equipment in the future.
The site has been vacant since the Department of Environment Regulation reported the site as ‘potentially contaminated’ due to illegal dumping in 2007.
But after years of environmental assessments and investigations, the City of Mandurah councillors voted in favour of giving 25 Red Road a new lease on life last Tuesday.
There is currently no budget allocated for the full implementation of the plan, which the City drafted through community consultation, but $50,000 were included within the 2016/17 budget to start rehabilitating the site.
It is expected the City would start fencing, revegetation and weed management works soon, with major works awaiting funding allocation.
The future vision for the site include an active recreation space capable of accommodating one AFL oval, toilets and change rooms, barbecues, picnic tables, a community garden, and an adventure space and playground.
A carpark and a bus drop off areas would also be included in the design.
