A push for state government funding could see the Falcon skate park on Flame Street upgraded to a competition-standard facility and community hub.
Liberal candidate for Dawesville Zak Kirkup, Member for Dawesville Kim Hames and Minister for Regional Development Terry Redman were spotted at the skate park on Tuesday morning as they continue to seek funding avenues to turn it into an asset for South Mandurah.
Mr Kirkup said the park had the potential to be a hot-spot for youth in the area, but needed an upgrade before it would be able to host skate competitions.
“At the moment the park is a bit drab, but it could be worth so much more to the community,” he said.
“An upgrade to the park would give our local youth something productive and active to do and with less kids swimming at Falcon Bay it would give them an avenue to get outside.”
The vision for the upgrade is similar to that of the Esperance skate park’s, which cost $1.52 million.
“Esperance’s park is constantly filled with kids getting out and enjoying it, and Dunsborough has had similar success,” Mr Redman said.
“South Mandurah is a growing area, and we want to give young people here the same quality skate parks that other areas have.”
Skate competitions would draw large crowds to the area, including many people from outside the Mandurah area.
