Shire of Murray residents who have swimming pools on their properties are reminded to ensure their pool environment is safe, in the lead-up to inspections in the region.
Shire officers have already completed inspections for most properties in Pinjarra, South Yunderup, North Yunderup, Stake Hill and Barraup.
In mid-January they will proceed to properties in Ravenswood, Dwellingup, and all rural localities.
Owners and occupiers of properties where pools are installed are requested to complete any maintenance and repairs to safety barriers prior to their scheduled inspection to ensure barriers are in place and gates and latches operate correctly.
Pool owners will receive written notification prior to their scheduled inspection.
Shire of Murray chief Dean Unsworth said a number of pool safety laws govern the installation and maintenance of safety barriers around domestic swimming and spa pools.
“The Shire of Murray implores all households to ensure their pool areas conform to these laws as failure to comply can incur serious penalties and put loved ones at risk,” he said.
According to the Department of Commerce, drowning is the most common cause of preventable death for children aged naught to five.
For every drowning death, it is estimated that 10 children are admitted to hospital following a near-drowning incident.
In Western Australia, 94 per cent of drowning incidents occur in and around domestic swimming pools.
Of the 94 per cent, 31 per cent occurred at a relative’s or neighbour’s home.
“Help reduce the risk of drowning incidents in our Shire and avoid infringements that may result from non-complaint barriers,” said Mr Unsworth.
