Peel Diamonds softball stud Abby Kitano, 13, is gearing up for the biggest test of her young sporting life after being selected to represent WA at the National Junior Softball Championships in Mirrabooka this month.
The left field received her first state side selection off the back of a standout year for the Peel Diamonds, and said she was “shocked” to get the nod.
“It was a huge surprise. I was so excited and shocked when I found out,” she said.
“You check the website and they give you an official letter, so when that arrived I was just thrilled.”
Tee-ball, softball and baseball are traditions in the Kitano household.
The family play a huge role in helping to run the Peel Diamonds and have been involved in the sport for years.
Abby began playing tee-ball as a youngster, spending four years in the sport before moving on the softball, which she has been playing for almost eight years now.
She was also a pitcher in baseball for five years.
Now she is set to don the black and gold for WA, and says her side has a good chance of taking out the top prize at the tournament.
“I think we’ve got a really strong group of players together for the tournament,” she said.
“It’s exciting to represent your state but to come away with a win would be even better so hopefully we can be a contender.”
Beginning on Sunday, January 15, the side will play 10 games over five days in an attempt to qualify for the grand final.
Abby said she was nervous, but would put her best foot forward at the games.
“The closer it gets the more nervous I’m starting to feel, but I’ve got some friends in the side so that sort of makes it easier,” she said.
“I’m really just looking forward to getting out there and playing against the other state sides.”
