Peel Health Campus has received $1.9 million in funding to increase the number of elective operations available.
The funding was announced by Health minister John Day at the hospital, which caters for the Mandurah and Murray population.
Mr Day said the funding reflected the growing need for adequate hospital care and surgery available to the community.
“Peel Health Campus is a vital part of the hospital network and this funding boost will enable the hospital to deliver more elective surgeries including gastrointestinal, colerectal, and ear, nose and throat (ENT) procedures,” Mr Day said.
“This is good news for people living in Peel and surrounding communities and puts the hospital on track to perform more than 8,100 planned elective surgeries for public patients in 2016-2017, up to 400 more than the previous year.”
Peel Health Campus CEO Margaret Sturdy said the funds would be of great benefit in relieving stress from the state’s elective surgery waiting lists.
“This is a large regional hospital, and we have state-of-the-art equipment and great training here, so upgrading the amount of surgeries means we can serve a wider segment of the population,” Dr Sturdy said.
“We’ve managed to keep capacity in a very quickly growing area, and this will allow us to keep track with that.”
Mr Day said the hospital continued to deliver excellent, efficient patient care, with operator Ramsay health Care recently securing a contract extension from mid-2018 and for a further five years.
“This not only ensures continuity of service, its competitive pricing model will save WA taxpayers an estimated $13 million over the life of the contract,” he said.
“The new contract provides stability for the community and confidence in the quality of health care.
“At the same time, we have commenced clinical service planning to address the region’s long-term health needs, which will help inform future options for the region.”
