Volunteers from five different churches across Pinjarra came together on Tuesday morning to stock up for a year of giving a hand to those who need it most.
Every year Pinjarra’s Uniting, Anglican, Catholic, Alliance and Family churches gather donated food from the public to stock up the Pinjarra Community Kitchen’s pantry, which services those in need throughout the year.
On Tuesday morning, local volunteers helped to unload a ute full of supplies for the kitchen’s pantry, from vegetables to cereal boxes and shampoo, with the help of the Shire of Murray.
The Pinjarra community kitchen was created in 2013 by Uniting church member Trevor Thomas, who felt he needed to contribute to helping those in need further.
He brought all the local churches together and started to operate a weekly soup kitchen at the back of Pinjarra’s Alliance church with a cooking trailer lent by the Peel Community Kitchen.
However, the Peel Community Kitchen claimed their trailer back, and the group started fundraising for their own equipment.
“We started three years ago believe it or not,” Mr Thomas said.
“Over the last three years we’ve been able to purchase all our own equipment, tables and chairs.”
Every Tuesday between 11am and 1pm the community kitchen provides a free sausage sizzle lunch to anyone in need, as well as shower facilities and hygiene products.
