The Australian Time Trial Association marks the change from their winter to summer racing schedule with “the Gents”.
Unlike all other events on the ATTA calendar which are individual efforts against the clock, the Gents is a two-person time trial, in which the finishing time is when the second rider crosses the line.
The race is very much about team work.
The times are also measured against age standard times, based on the oldest rider in the pair.
This encourages younger riders to pair with older riders and mixed pairs of male and female riders.
At the start there was a good number of pairs of young and old male riders, as well as mixed pairs, women’s teams and some solo riders.
There were a couple of hardy souls, who after racing the 28-kilometre course with a partner, returned to the start and raced it again solo.
The hot favourites had to be Chris Glasby who won the state over-50 men’s time trial last week and Michael Freiberg who finished close second in the state open men’s time trial.
The pair did not disappoint.
Finishing the course almost a minute faster than anybody else and taking the Gents trophy on age standard times by two minutes.
The ATTA summer season starts next Sunday at Bibra Lake and the Peel District Cycling Club mid week time trials start at Hopelands on Wednesday, November 2.
