Mandurah Performing Arts Centre will soon blossom with colour for the first ever Mandurah Fantasy of Flowers event.
The event will include two floral competitions: the Australian Oasis Designz Cup, and the WA Floral Art Society state championship.
It will also feature displays by the World Flower Council, Fantasy of Flowers, and South Metropolitan TAFE floristry students.
Fantasy of Flowers has a history of 35 years in different locations, but organiser Colleen Mailey said they hope it will become an annual event in Mandurah.
“This is the first here, and it’s a huge wow-factor for Mandurah, they’ve never seen anything like it,” Ms Mailey said.
“We’re a team with a passion for flowers and people, and this way we can combine the two.”
MPAC’s east foyer will be dedicated to the two competitions, while the main foyer will feature big designs from some of Western Australian’s best florists.
“Some of the flowers in the designs, nobody here will have seen before, they’re imported,” Ms Mailey said.
Ms Mailey said the modern design of MPAC made it perfect for the show, and looks forward to filling it with winning flower arrangements.
Kalamunda florist Jeannette Hudson is part of the WA Floral Arts Society and lectured for 25 years on floristry at TAFE, and will feature her work in the show.
“I enjoy the latest trends, creating an original design… using techniques and material in different ways that you wouldn’t think to use it, and manipulating material to make a design,” Ms Hudson said.
“In the Floral Arts Society we don’t use artificial material, so it’s always fresh material, you learn to treat material and condition it so it lasts well. That’s always a challenge.”
The show will be held from 10am-9pm on Saturday October 22, and 10am-4pm on Sunday October 23 at the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre.
