Local food and drink producers are in a frenzy for competition season, and this year it’s paid off at the Perth Royal Show where a number of Peel businesses’ baked, brewed and bountiful wares won accolades.
Miami Bakehouse director Simone Sanders said Peel’s particularly good produce may be down to health competition in the region.
“We’ve got a couple of particularly good operators down here… we know that it’s an important part of your business, to always pursue quality. I think that’s why you enter the competitions, because it’s really good teamwork,” she said.
“It’s about pushing yourself.”

Bread and Pastry Show
Peel was made a good candidate for the title of Western Australia’s bread basket, with numerous successes scored by our local bakeries, and more to come.
The Miami Bakehouse won gold for their cheesecake, chocolate eclairs and quiche lorraine, along with six silver and fifteen bronze across a number of categories.
The Pinjarra Bakery and Patisserie’s ANZAC biscuits and Scottish shortbread took gold, and scored eleven silver and fifteen bronze.
Both bakeries were successful in the Pastry Awards too, with Pinjarra Bakery taking out ‘Most Successful Exhibitor in Pastry Cooking’ and ‘The Great Australian Pie Competition’.
Miami Bakehouse won ‘Most Creative Gourmet Pie.’
The Pinjarra French Hot Bread Shop won silver for their carrot cake, and bronze for their sausage rolls.
Beer and Wine Shows
In the Beer Show, Cape Bouvard Brewing Company’s Thorny Devil beers won two silvers, one in the ale draught category for their ‘Blonde Ale’, and on in the reduced-alcohol category for their ‘Vienna Lager’.
Millbrook Winery had some success in the Wine Show, bringing home two silvers for their ‘Limited Release Chardonnay’ and the sweet fortified wine ‘Pedro Ximenes’.
Their ‘Limited Release Chardonnay’, ‘Margaret River Sauvignon Blanc’, and single dry red varietal ‘Geographe Tempranillo’ also won them bronzes.
