Main Roads WA has announced a safety review of an intersection in Mandurah where residents have been complaining for years about potential road danger.
In the latest incident at the accident hot spot, which is at the intersection of Mandurah Road and Catalina Drive, a male motorcyclist in his twenties was injured last week and taken to hospital.
A spokesperson from Main Roads WA said a review of the intersection was needed after the accident.
“A road safety inspection of this intersection will be carried out next month and a report is expected to be available sometime in November,” she said.
“Representatives from Main Roads’ Road Safety Branch and South West region will undertake a site inspection at the intersection of Mandurah Road and Catalina Drive.
“The inspection will seek to identify if there are any safety issues for drivers using the intersection and determine appropriate actions to address any problems found.”
Mandurah MP David Templeman welcomed the announcement of a review, but warned Main Roads they would have to consult the community as well as conduct a technical inspection.
“I’m very happy with that, but I would be urging Main Roads to consult with stakeholders,” he said.
“They should be talking to the two principals of the schools on Catalina Drive.
“They should also be talking to the community reference group, which is run by Creative Community on behalf of PEET.
“While they’ll look at the technical aspects, its actually the pattern of usage which is an important consideration for this intersection.”
Mr Templeman said he remained concerned about the number of novice drivers who used the intersection.
“This intersection has a lot of novice drivers going through it; especially around school times there are p-platers driving to the Baptist college, there are parents dropping kids,” he said.
“They should be talking to the community and they should also be talking to me.”
