Mandurah’s dodgy drivers will have to watch out when running red lights after Mandurah had its first two red-light speed cameras installed this week.
The two new cameras are located on Mandurah Road, the first one at the intersection of Leslie Street and Mariners Cove Drive, and the second one near the train station at the Mandurah Road and Allnutt Street intersection.
They would work both as speed cameras and red light cameras, and would be operational from October.
These cameras are two of seven cameras planned for Mandurah, Bunbury, Rockingham, Atwell, Lansdale and Mirrabooka.
WA Police Road Safety Commissioner Kim Papalia said the cameras aimed to reduce the number of crashes at high-risk intersections.
“We actively encourage people to talk about road safety and the risks we face daily on our roads,” he said.
“There are many issues that contribute to these risks; speed is one such factor.
“When it comes to speed, we know that the faster you are going the more likely you are to have a crash, and the consequences of such crashes are more serious.
“Cameras are recognised as being the most efficient way of changing poor driver behaviour, for instance red light speed cameras have demonstrated a reduction of intersection crashes by an average of 60 per cent after installation at high-risk intersections.”
