South Mandurah’s Brendon Jones became the first nominee for the WA Country Football League’s 2016 player of the year award last Wednesday.
The former WAFL star has been prolific in his first season back at the country level, and received the nomination for his outstanding year representing the Falcons, the Peel Football League and the state.
Jones played 219 league games at the WAFL level for Perth and Peel Thunder, and settled in to his new role as a midfielder for South Mandurah perfectly in 2016.
He helped the Falcons to a fifth-place finish, playing 16 games and being named in the team’s best players 14 times.
The ball magnet was one of the Falcons’ highest vote-collectors in the 2016 Ross Elliott medal count.
He also claimed the title of grand final MVP at the Landmark Country Football Championships, where he and teammate Brad Holmes played a significant part in securing the Peel Football League’s first ever A-grade victory.
Jones was selected to the WA state country team for the carnival and was named best on ground in the team’s win against South Australia.
The remaining finalists for player of the year will be named in the coming weeks, with the winner to be announced at the WA Country Football League’s WAFL grand final luncheon.
