So, MTV calls you up and tells you they want you to host four minutes of the MTV Awards. You’re told you can do anything you want. What do you do?
Well, if you’re Kanye West, you spend the time talking about how your wife still lets you talk to your ex.
Look, I make no bones about my frustration over Kanye’s God-tier status. He irks me. But, for a man who continuously professes himself as an artist, to be granted such a huge international stage and do practically nothing with it smacks of narcissism.
For comparison, Beyonce and Kendrick Lamar – two other top-level names in hip hop – absolutely killed it with their medley at the BET Awards back in June. They had a clear message, an amazing set-piece and the ability to pull it off.
What was Kanye’s message? I get to make naked wax sculptures of people because I’m Kanye.
Art is art. Boring the hell out of everyone is not.
