The City of Mandurah has taken one step forward in their quest of becoming one of Australia’s more inclusive and accessible cities.
The City hosted the Creating Real Employment Pathways seminar at the Mandurah Offshore Fishing and Sailing Club on Wednesday.
The seminar is a result of a partnership between the City, Inclusion WA, National Disability Services and Sotica.
And it aims at guiding experts, people involved in community work, policy developers, people with disabilities and their families, support workers and business leaders in providing suitable and beneficial employment for people with disabilities.
International employment pathways experts Bruce Uditsky and Anne Hughson, from Inclusion Alberta, Canada, will share their 20 years of experience in creating open employment opportunities for people with significant disabilities.
They will talk about the importance of employment in realising a full, meaningful and inclusive life, as well as key strategies for people with disabilities to find and keep suitable jobs.
They will also outline the role of employers in providing support, removing obstacles and adapting to individual needs, and the crucial importance of community engagement and the creation of partnerships.
The seminar will try to address questions such as where to start when hiring a person with a disability, how to understand better the needs of employees, what are the benefits of hiring workers with different abilities and how to engage members of the community.
