The Peel Thunderbirds youth girls capped off their unblemished 2016 season with a premiership win, their third in a row, when they defeated Swan Districts on Sunday.
The in-form Swans side put up a solid fight against league heavyweights Peel, but it wasn’t enough as the Thunderbirds continued their dominant ways to post the perfect season once again.
Coach Justin Hocking said the win was yet to sink in, but was reward for the girls’ hard work throughout the season.
“The girls have played great footy throughout the year and it’s great to see them finish it off with a premiership,” Hocking said.
“It’s definitely exciting for the club and was well-earned.”
The game was a hard-fought tussle, but Peel managed to outshine Swans and run away with an 11.9 (75) to 5.3 (33) winners.
Peel’s Kate Bartlett was awarded the best on ground medal.
Coach Hocking said the Thunderbirds played their style of game, working the switch and refusing to bomb the ball down the line to contests.
“We went into the game wanting to make sure we switch the ball right and use our skills to control the game,” he said.
“To Swans’ credit they competed really hard and put up one of the biggest fights we had all season.
“I think the girls showed plenty of composure to overcome that.”
The three-peat of premierships comes on the back of a two-year long winning streak for the Thunderbirds.
