Construction works on the new Mandurah Traffic Bridge have reached a milestone with the first concrete pillars being raised on the eastern foreshore.
Main Roads said the replacement is progressing well, with work both on land and in the estuary now started.
“The replacement of the Old Mandurah Traffic Bridge is progressing well, piling work on-land and in the estuary is the current focus of the project,” a Main Roads spokesperson said.
“There will be 79 steel piles installed in the estuary, as well as 49 concrete piles in the east and west embankments.
“To date 36 concrete piles and 27 steel piles have been installed. The steel piles are stored at the Mandurah Marina and are towed upriver to the bridge site and piling barge as needed.”
Piling operations on the western foreshore were completed last week, while the casting bay and launching structure – where the bridge segments will be built before being shunted onto the pylons – also progressing.
“Silt curtains are being used to ensure strict environmental standards are maintained, with 125m of the curtains installed to stop sand plumes and debris drifting into the estuary,” the spokesperson said.
