Pinjarra’s popular Cantwell Park brand new play space is finally open and ready to use four months after the third and last stage of the project started.
Project sponsors, Shire President Maree Reid and member for Murray-Wellington Murray Cowper MLA gathered at the park on Monday to officially open the playground.
The new play equipment includes rope net climbing facilities, an adult fitness area, a giant nest swing and a double cable way flying fox.
The works aimed at providing recreation activities not only for toddlers to 12 year-olds but also for adults.
Several additional pathways were also constructed in the area and additional landscaping works were undertaken.
Shire of Murray President Maree Reid said the park redevelopment was part of the council’s Pinjarra CBD Revitalisation project, that seeks to activate the banks of the Murray river and attract more visitors to the area.
“We are proud to deliver a park of such an impeccable standard to our community,” she said.
“Since stage three works commenced in May 2016 there has been an excited undertone throughout the community.
“It has been pleasing to read the comments on the Shire’s Facebook page and witness the increasing numbers of users across a range of age groups in the park.”
Further works to redevelop the Murray River foreshore are set to begin in 2017 once the Shire locks down State Government funding.
The Shire of Murray has also allocated another $400,000 within its 2016/17 budget towards the construction of a new bore to replace the current water extraction system located at Cantwell Park.
The initiative hopes to improve the quality of the water extracted from the Murray River servicing both Cantwell Park and the Edenvale precinct, which is currently quite poor.
Both areas are in urgent need of good quality water supplies to mitigate the impact to existing grassed areas and vegetation.
The new bore would serve Pinjarra’s foreshore, local parks, the town centre and the Edenvale precinct.
Works are scheduled to start in April 2017.
