Frederick Irwin Anglican School year 9 student and Peel District Cycling Club member Oliver Bleddyn took out gold at the WA State Road race and Individual Time Trial Championships earlier this month.
The up and coming cycling star became the state champion in style, setting a new course record with an average speed of 41.5 kilometres per hour in the time trial and also winning bronze in the road race of the competition.
Earlier in the year Oliver competed at the WA state criterium championships, winning gold and becoming the state champ.
The youngster has a string of gold medals, having also finished first at the WA state track championships in January where he won gold in the scratch and points races.
He also finished third, picking up a bronze medal, in the kerin race.
Oliver’s performance earned him a spot on the WA state track cycling team.
This resulted in his participation at the Australian National Track Championships in Tasmania this February, where he secured seventh in the scratch and points races.
The rising star also took out wins at the 2016 Peel Junior Tour in the under 15 category and at the Collie-Donnybrook handicap.
Oliver said that his ambition for cycling is to race at the elite level.
“I have been cycling for seven years, switching from mountain biking to road three years ago,” he said.
“I am really proud to represent my state and I hope this is the start of more good things to come.
“Having regular events helps to keep me focused and train hard.”
Oliver’s next competition is scheduled at the end of this month when he will compete in the Australian National Junior Cycling Championship in three events.
He will take on the individual time trial, criterium and road races.
